Invisalign Q&A
What is Invisalign?
Everybody wants a straighter smile. In fact, a properly aligned set of teeth are better for your oral health and generally considered more attractive. But many people, especially adults, avoid getting traditional braces to spare themselves from the mouthful of metal.
Fortunately, Invisalign offers an orthodontic system that works quickly, effectively, and most importantly, invisibly.
The Invisalign system straightens your teeth with a series of aligner trays made from smooth, flexible, and clear plastic. They’re an increasingly popular alternative to traditional metal braces, with eight million people worldwide having used the system to straighten their smiles.
What does Invisalign treat?
Invisalign corrects many conditions that braces have traditionally addressed, including:
- Crooked teeth
- Crowded teeth
- Widely spaced teeth
- Underbite
- Overbite
- Crossbite
- Open bite
You can also use Invisalign for cosmetic purposes, like generally straightening your teeth to improve the appearance of your smile.
How does Invisalign work?
Invisalign straightens your teeth using the same principle as braces: exerting a small yet constant amount of pressure on your teeth that gradually pushes them towards a better position.
The difference is that, rather than doing this with metal wires and brackets, Invisalign does this with a series of custom-designed clear aligners.
How do I get started with Invisalign?
Your dentist creates your aligners from a virtual model of your smile. Northwoods Dental Group uses an intraoral scanner at their office, enabling your dentist to create your virtual model without having to use messy physical impressions.
Once the virtual model is uploaded, your dentist manipulates it to map out all the necessary steps your teeth need to take to reach their proper alignment.
Next, your provider uses that model to create your series of trays, each of which are made to represent a different step on your journey towards proper alignment. You wear each set of aligners for roughly two weeks, at which point you move on to the next tray in your series.
You wear your aligners constantly, except when you need to eat, brush, or floss. The number of aligners required for a treatment varies, but most people finish the process with 20-29 sets.
