4 Reasons to Choose Among for Sedation Dentistry

4 Reasons to Choose Among for Sedation Dentistry

You have an upcoming dental procedure. Perhaps you need a dental implant, in which your dentist inserts a titanium post into your gum. You might need a dental bridge. Even though we numb your mouth during dental procedures, you may be concerned about feeling some pain or other sensations anyway.

Or, perhaps a loved one has a dental emergency. During an emergency, you and your loved one want relief from the pain and trauma.

Our board-certified dentist, Dr. Nathan Klabunde, and his expert team at Northwoods Dental Group in Columbus, Ohio, provide sedation dentistry for our patients who request it. If you’re uncertain about sedation dentistry or don’t know much about it, we can assure you that it’s safe and effective. We provide three options from which to choose: nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas”; IV sedation; and oral medication. All are going to help you relax during the procedure so that Dr. Klabunde can complete it as efficiently as possible.

Following are four good reasons to select sedation dentistry for a dental procedure.

Alleviates anxiety about the dental procedure

Does the thought of having a dental procedure raise your anxiety level and keep you from picking up the phone to schedule it? Your oral health affects your general health. For example, gum disease is linked to heart disease. Don’t let fear keep you from maintaining good oral health.

You select the method of sedation that you’re comfortable with. You’ll be completely relaxed while Dr. Klabunde completes his work. You’ll need a family member or friend to drive you home, where you can take a nap. Don’t worry; you’ll only have hazy memories of sitting in the dental chair.

No pain during the procedure

Even though we numb your mouth for procedures, you can still feel sensations as the dentist uses his tools. You may register those sensations as uncomfortable. After all, we’re working in your mouth.

Sedation dentistry helps eliminate many of the sensations. Your brain doesn’t receive pain signals during the procedure; the nerve cells are disabled by the sedation. Knowing in advance that you’ll have sedation helps lower any anxiety you might have felt about the upcoming procedure.

No gag reflex

At one time or another at the dentist’s office, you’ve probably experienced a gag reflex. Perhaps it was when your hygienist was polishing your back molars or when you were getting a dental bridge on teeth in the back of your mouth. When it happens, you spend time clearing your throat, coughing and/or spitting into a tissue.

Sedation dentistry calms the gag reflex. You don’t have to undergo uncomfortable gagging in the dentist’s chair.

Time passes quickly

If you’re getting an implant or a crown, your appointment is going to take some time. If you don’t like the idea of staring at the ceiling while reclining in the dental chair for a while, consider sedation dentistry.

Even though you may be in the chair for more than an hour, you won’t remember much of that time. You may remember some moments, but part of the time you may actually be in a light sleep state. You’ll be surprised when you look at the clock after the procedure.

Call Northwoods Dental Group or book an appointment online today for all of your dental needs. We make you comfortable while in the dental chair.
